Diagnostic Discussions: Real-World Cases on the Identification of Ocular Surface Diseases (CME Webcast)

Activity Description and Purpose

Corneal nerves have an essential role in maintaining ocular surface health and homeostasis. Manifestations of neurosensory abnormalities affecting corneal innervation include dry eye disease and neurotrophic keratopathy. These conditions can exist as a standalone entity, but they can also be concurrent and have overlapping features, making diagnosis challenging. Early diagnosis is important to allow intervention that can help to restore function and improve quality of life. This educational activity includes real-world cases and discussion on diagnostic modalities used to identify these conditions and options for treatment. The desired results of this educational activity are to familiarize ophthalmologists with the role of the corneal nerve in maintaining ocular surface homeostasis and practical strategies for screening and diagnosing of ocular surface disease that can arise as the result of corneal nerve dysfunction.

Target Audience

This educational activity is intended for ophthalmologists.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, participants will be better able to:

  • Review diagnostic modalities used for proper assessment of ocular surface disease
  • Integrate evaluation of corneal sensitivity into assessment of ocular surface disease
