Case Discussions in Parenteral Nutrition: Improving Outcomes for Patients in 2021 and Beyond (Archived CE/CME Webcast)
This educational activity has expired. You will not be able to claim credit for this activity.
Activity Description and Purpose
New research into the role of various intravenous lipid emulsion (ILE) formulations in managing nutrition in the critically ill and those at risk of elevated systemic inflammation has evolved drastically in the last few years. New evidence and guidelines suggest that fish oil–containing ILEs reduce systemic inflammation and should be used preferentially in hospitalized patients who are critically ill, including those with COVID-19. Fish oil–containing ILEs have also been shown to reduce the risk of parenteral nutrition (PN)-associated liver disease among patients on long-term PN. In this webcast, which captures the proceedings of a live virtual CE/CME symposium held during the ASPEN21 Virtual Conference, experts apply new guidelines and evidence to a variety of patient scenarios. The desired results of this educational activity are to increase knowledge of the evidence and best practices in PN among clinicians and to enable confidence selecting and dosing ILEs in a variety of adult patient scenarios.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for US dietitians, pharmacists, nurses, and physicians engaged in the care of adult patients requiring parenteral nutrition.
Learning Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
- Discuss recent recommendations for the selection of ILEs in hospitalized and home patients and the rationale behind them
- Compare the effects of various ILEs on liver function parameters and risk of developing parenteral nutrition–associated liver disease
- Translate recent recommendations on the use of ILEs to various clinical scenarios
